Message My 1990 NA was showing the same problem (fan would cut out intermittently), and for me the solution was carefully taking apart and cleaning the sliding rheostat switch that controls the fan speed. The moving part of the switch was not always making good contact to complete the electrical circuit. I finally figured this out after noticing that the a/c was most likely to cut out after I went over a bump. The fix is not difficult (cleaning/gentle wire brushing), but time-consuming (you have to take apart the entire switch cluster), and make sure you don't lose any of the little ball bearings (two, I believe) that are an essential part of the switch. Anyway, that was about six months ago, and the A/C hasn't cut out again. Also, for what it's worth, the A/C (original R12 system, not converted) in my car has NEVER frozen up, even in humid northern Virginia, though I once had a VW that used to freeze up all the time, especially on low fan speed.
